How to read bonus terms

Almost every dispute between a player and a casino over a bonus comes down to a clause the player did not read. Bonus terms are long, but they follow a familiar pattern, and once you know the pattern you can go through any offer in a few minutes. We do not reproduce Urho's terms here, because they can change and only the operator's version applies. Use this page as a checklist when you read them yourself.

The clauses to find first

  1. Wagering requirement: the multiplier and whether it applies to the bonus only or to deposit plus bonus. See wagering requirements for the maths.
  2. Game contribution: which games count, how much, and which are excluded.
  3. Maximum bet: the stake ceiling while the bonus is active. One bet above it can be enough to void winnings.
  4. Expiry: how long the bonus stays valid and how long you have to complete the wagering.
  5. Withdrawal cap: any limit on how much bonus play can pay out.
  6. Eligible deposits: minimum amounts and excluded payment methods.

The less visible clauses

General bonus policies often contain rules that never appear on the offer page. "Irregular play" clauses let the operator void winnings for betting patterns it considers abusive. "One bonus per household" can affect people sharing an address or a device. Some terms let the operator ask for extra verification documents before releasing bonus winnings. Others say that requesting a withdrawal cancels all active bonuses. None of these is unusual, but each can surprise you if you only read the headline.

A worked check

Imagine an offer advertised as "€30 bonus". The terms say 40× wagering on deposit plus bonus, slots count 100% and live games 0%, a €4 maximum bet, seven days to finish and a cap of five times the bonus on withdrawals. A €30 deposit therefore means €2,400 of slot bets within a week, no live games, no bet above €4 and at most €150 withdrawable from bonus play. Written out like that, the offer is easy to judge. That is the point of reading the terms.

Habits that prevent disputes

When things go wrong

If winnings are voided, ask the operator in writing for the exact clause and the evidence behind the decision. The complaints page explains the next steps. Remember that bonus terms are the operator's rules, and regulators in many countries add stricter limits on top. Related guides: the welcome bonus, cashback and promo codes.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the bonus terms?
Usually in two places: the specific offer page and a general bonus policy in the site's terms and conditions. Both apply, and the general policy often contains the clauses that matter most, such as maximum bet and game exclusions.
Can the operator change the terms after I accept a bonus?
Many terms reserve that right. Save a copy of the terms on the day you accept an offer, for example as a PDF, so that you can show what applied if a dispute arises.
What does irregular play mean?
It is a broad clause that lets an operator void bonus winnings for betting patterns it considers abusive, such as switching stake sizes or playing excluded games. Because it is vague, it is one of the most common reasons for disputes.
